Der Sammelband umfasst die Beiträge der Tagung «Geschichte-Recht -Politik. In memoriam Helmut Ridder», die im Februar 2009 an der Freien Universität Berlin stattfand. Helmut Ridder, Professor für Öffentliches Recht und die Wissenschaft von der Politik an der Universität Gießen, war der unbeirrbare Anwalt der am Vorbild westlicher Demokratien zu messenden deutschen Republik. Er ließ nicht ab, den deutschen Nachkriegsstaaten die Folgen ihrer Demokratieverfehlung vorzuhalten. Kristallisationspunkt seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit ist das lebendige Wechselverhältnis von Geschichte, Recht und Politik. Das Buch vereint über den Kreis der Schüler Ridders hinaus Wissenschaftler und Politiker, die mitunter auch abweichende Standpunkte stark zu machen suchen. Die Thematik der Referate reicht von der Weimarer Republik bis zur Gegenwart. Einzelne Beiträge behandeln auch Fragestellungen der aktuellen politischen Auseinandersetzung. Der Anhang enthält zwei spätere Texte Ridders, die verschiedentlich Antworten auf die in den Beiträgen aufgeworfenen Fragen zu geben vermögen. In einer Zeit, in der in Europa demokratiefeindliche Einstellungen an Boden gewinnen, gibt der Band ein eindringliches Votum für die Notwendigkeit von Demokratie und ihrer Verteidigung ab.
