Bernd und Hilla Becher sind die Begründer einer neuen Dokumentarphotographie. Ausgehend von der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie, an der sie lehren, hat sich ihr Ruhm und der Ruf ihrer Schule inzwischen weltweit verbreitet. Ihre Methode ist die konsequente Verbindung von Kunst und wissenschaftlicher Systematik, die Arbeit in typologischen Reihen und der vergleichende Aspekt. Die Serie wurde in ihren Photographien auch zum ästhetischen Gesetz. Ihre ersten Bestandsaufnahmen verfallender Zweckbauten des frühen Industriezeitalters betitelten Bernd und Hilla Becher Anonyme Skulpturen. Sie begannen im Siegerland, zogen weiter ins Ruhrgebiet und nach Belgien; 1965 dokumentierten sie die Industriedenkmäler Großbritanniens, ab 1968 auch die der USA.
