Description

Under General Franco, a unique chapter of European urban planning history was written in Spain. Especially in the two decades after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a crude right dictatorship used urban planning as a means of securing dominion, oppression, inclusion and exclusion. At the same time, the regime created its own spatial development policy, which understood many of the achievements of the city of the 20th century to adapt to its own power interests. Not only in the capital of Madrid and in the industrial city Barcelona has been intensively reconstructed and modernised. Urban planning also changed the rural area, led to the founding of numerous new villages and was used in the then Spanish colonies of North Africa as an instrument of state policy. Living, working and recreation only refer to the practical fields of this urban construction. Reconstruction and renewal were also building blocks of a right-wing historical policy, providing signs of coming greatness and evidence of inviting modernity. The population should be forcibly shaped in the sense of a nationalCatholicist crusade. How Spain was rebuilt and renewed until the end of the 1950s testifies to the performance of Spanish urban planning, but also to the continuous evaluation of foreign experiences, also from fascist Italy and National Socialist Germany. It is part of a common European urban planning history that has been largely neglected so far and now appears for the first time as a comprehensive monograph. The richly illustrated book presents the results of a multi-year study funded by the German Research Foundation and based on previous work on urban planning under Stalin, Mussolini and Salazar.
