Bei der Bewerbung um die Austragung der FIFA WM 2006 konnte sich Deutschland erfolgreich gegen eine Reihe von Mitbewerbern durchsetzen und ist somit im Jahr 2006 Gastgeber der WM-Endrunde. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, dem Leser einen umfassenden Überblick über die im Rahmen der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006 in Deutschland vom Fußballweltverband FIFA eingesetzten Vermarktungsinstrumente für dieses Mega-Event zu verschaffen. Neben der Betrachtung der in den Vermarktungsprozess involvierten Akteure bilden die organisatorische Abwicklung durch die Vertragspartner der FIFA sowie die aus den einzelnen Maßnahmen zu erwartenden Wachstumseffekte zentrale Bestandteile der Untersuchung. Letzteres beinhaltet neben der Betrachtung der finanziellen Zielgrößen ebenfalls die Darstellung der aus der WM-Vermarktung resultierenden Impulse für das Image des Fußballs sowie des Gastgeberlandes Deutschland. Darüber hinaus soll analysiert werden, welche Wachstumsimpulse von der Ausrichtung der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006 für die deutsche Volkswirtschaft und speziell für die zwölf Ausrichterstädte zu erwarten sind. Am Beispiel des Spielortes Hamburg erfolgt eine Untersuchung der von der Stadt Hamburg im Hinblick auf die Weltmeisterschaft 2006 realisierten und geplanten Projekte. Auf dieser Analyse und den Erfahrungen vergangener sportlicher Großereignisse basierend wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern ein Mega-Event wie die FIFA WM langfristig wirtschaftliche Wachstumseffekte für das Gastgeberland bewirken kann.
