Im Hier und Jetzt, in dem Kleidungsstücke oft nur eine Modesaison überleben und dann gleich entsorgt werden, steht man staunend vor den fragilen, oft aber noch in leuchtenden Farben erhaltenen Überresten einer längst vergangenen Kultur. Vor gut 1500 Jahren waren diese Gewänder mit aufwändig verzierten Dekorationselementen den Menschen für Jahrzehnte ein kostbarer Besitz und begleiteten sie sogar auf ihrem letzten Weg, vom Diesseits ins Jenseits. Der napoleonische Reisebericht „Description de l'Égypte" von 1809 stellt bereits eine komplett erhaltene Tunika vor, aber erst die Entdeckung antiker Gräberfelder in Mittelägypten mit zahlreichen Textilfunden am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erweckte das ganz große Interesse von Museen und privaten Sammlern. So kamen vor 135 Jahren die ersten „Kleider aus dem Wüstensand" in das Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg - erst jetzt wird die Sammlung, auf über 170 Objekte angewachsen, dem Publikum teilweise zugänglich gemacht und gleichzeitig in Buchform vorgestellt. Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen der Textilkunst des pharaonischen und koptischen Ägypten werden herausgearbeitet, Motive und Herstellungsmethoden beschrieben.
