Optimisten sehen die Chance eines durch China geöffneten, gigantischen neuen Weltmarktes und dadurch resultierend gepuschten weltweiten Aufschwungs. Sie versprechen sich anhaltendes wirtschaftliches Wachstum nicht nur in China und den angrenzenden Regionen sondern auch in führenden Industrienationen wie den USA und der EU. Pessimisten verweisen auf die Gefahren eines übermäßigen Wachstums, der einhergehenden ungesunden strukturellen Entwicklung wie der Einkommensverteilung in China und die Gefährdung deutscher Arbeitsplätze. Sie befürchten eine Überschwemmung der Märkte durch importierte, preiswerte chinesische Produkte und schlimmstenfalls ein Kollabieren des chinesischen Systems mit katastrophalen Folgen für die Weltwirtschaft. Die vorliegende Untersuchung gibt einen Überblick der Wirtschaftsgeschichte Chinas, der Handelsabkommen und der Entwicklungen in ausgewählten Industriezweigen seit dem Beitritt in die WTO, um die oben genannten Thesen besser beurteilen zu können.
