Este libro es una exhaustiva investigación acerca de las concepciones y la práctica política del escritor peruano Ricardo Palma (1833-1919). El trabajo es original pues se trata de una faceta poco estudiada y conocida del gran tradicionista peruano del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX y es, en realidad, un aporte desde la disciplina histórica a los estudios palminos. Este estudio abre el campo ideológico y político de Palma para conocer mejor su lugar como el importante pensador y político que fuera. En efecto, el libro muestra las características del pensamiento liberal de Ricardo Palma y los avatares políticos por los que Palma atravesara en su larga vida, defendiendo siempre sus convicciones liberales y manifestándose a favor o en contra de gobiernos de acuerdo a lo que él consideraba correcto y útil a la República. El libro emplea diversas fuentes y expone sus capítulos de acuerdo a la trayectoria vital de Palma, a quien le tocó vivir una época de revoluciones, crisis y caudillismos que ya es proverbial en la Historia del Perú.
