En los últimos años se aprecia un creciente distanciamiento de los ciudadanos respecto a las instituciones europeas, siendo el mecanismo de toma de decisiones de la Unión objeto de constantes críticas e incomprensiones. Se acusa a la UE de "déficit democrático" y, en particular, se cuestiona la transparencia y eficacia de la participación de los lobbies, ONGs y grupos de interés. Esta obra permite conocer con detalle cuál fue la participación de la sociedad civil durante el proceso de reforma que se inicia con la Convención Europea y al que pone fin la adopción del actual Tratado de Lisboa: qué mecanismos se utilizaron para encauzar dicha participación, con qué motivaciones, con qué eficacia y qué intereses estaban en juego. De ahí su interés, tanto para quienes tratan de influir en el proceso de toma de decisiones de la UE, como para las propias instituciones europeas, en pleno proceso de reflexión sobre cómo acercarse más al ciudadano. Esta Tesis tiene como principal objetivo difundir cuál ha sido la aportación de la sociedad civil al proceso de construcción europea y su repercusión en la Europa actual.
