En los inicios de la implantología dental científica se proponía que las fijaciones debían ser colocadas en los pacientes mediante protocolos en dos etapas. Con el implante sumergido varios meses antes de que pudiese ser puesto en función. Con el avance del conocimiento, se comenzó a optar por la aplicación de protocolos que permitiesen la puesta en función en el menor tiempo posible, incluso mediante la carga inmediata del implante. Una vez colocados, los implantes dentales, han de integrarse en el tejido receptor por medio de la unión a hueso vital u osteointegración. La osteointegración depende en gran medida de las propiedades de superficie del implante, en su gran mayoría de titanio, por lo que se hace necesario someterlos a tratamientos superficiales que modifiquen las características de la capa más externa y de este modo obtener una respuesta biológica óptima, predecible y deseada, destacando métodos físicos de aumento de rugosidad y modificaciones químicas que proporcionen bioactividad al implante oral.
