Esta obra contribuye de manera significativa al conocimiento de las características, dimensiones e impacto de la inmigración extranjera en una región particular de Colombia. Antioquia, ubicada en el noroccidente de Colombia y conocida por su desarrollo industrial y comercial, entre 1820 y 1920, experimentó una selectiva e influyente inmigración procedente de Inglaterra, Alemania, Francia, Suecia, Italia, Estados Unidos y de muy diversos orígenes. Caracterizados por su alto grado de capacitación y experiencia en sus diferentes oficios y profesiones, aquellos inmigrantes lograron insertarse de manera exitosa a la vida económica y social de esta región, contribuyendo a su proceso civilizatorio y avance tecno-económico. No obstante, algunos de ellos se vieron arrastrados por las costumbres y pulsiones nativas, motivo por el cual se vieron inmersos en actividades ilícitas, fueron reconocidos dipsómanos, putañeros y rebuscadores. Ambas facetas se exploran en este libro que revela los claroscuros de la condición humana en una región que se encontraba en proceso de construcción.
