Description

GIS-based transportation infrastructure maps and accurate traffic data are essentially required to develop effective traffic management systems. This book describes a relatively new concept of obtaining traffic data such as traffic headway and density from high resolution satellite images, which is then used to obtain traffic volumes and analysis of traffic flow for a selected network. Satellite imagery provide a less time and labor intensive tool to extract transportation infrastructure maps which can be used for various applications such as asset management and development of Intelligent Traffic Management system. Acquiring traffic data using satellite images provide quick estimation of traffic flow which can be very useful where proper infrastructure for collecting traffic data does not exist.
