El trabajo da cuenta de la manera cómo se hizo posible el nacionalismo en Colombia, de la forma como el poder actuó en función de esos intereses, de cómo se crearon unas verdades en su favor, cómo acudió el saber en su beneficio, y cómo se crearon unas instituciones, unas profesiones y unos discursos para justificarlo. Todo esto configuró un sistema de verdades alrededor de la idea de nación, tejido desde tres preocupaciones: el pasado, el pueblo y el territorio. En efecto, el pasado se documentó, aparecieron nuevos héroes, se habló de un pueblo originario, y surgieron de la tierra vestigios arqueológicos que lo haría visible. Apareció el pueblo representado en movimientos indígenas, en el crecimiento de las clases medias y en la lucha de los trabajadores. Una identidad se volvió discurso y una disciplina se constituyó para darle sentido y alojarla. Los saberes sobre estas tres nociones, componentes de la nación, se convirtieron antes que nada en disciplinas escolares. El Estado se volvió educador. La escuela se convirtió así en un territorio de disputa ideológica, también el maestro y por supuesto la pedagogía.
