Este libro es una edición de la tesis doctoral Variabilidad de Estrategias Tecnologicas Liticas durante el Periodo Formativo (ca. 2400- 1400 Ap) en la Puna de Salta. Constituye un aporte al conocimiento de las sociedades productoras de alimentos tempranas de las tierras altas del Noroeste Argentino explorando las tecnologías líticas de conjuntos que comparten características contextuales en un área y un tiempo acotados: Puna de Salta, hace ca. 2000 Ap. Si bien los conjuntos analizados pertenecen a sociedades productoras de alimentos, sus bases económicas se centran en diferentes opciones: agricultura, en San Antonio de los Cobres, y pastoreo, en Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes. En líneas generales, los conjuntos creados por los antiguos pobladores presentan características que se asocian a las prácticas predominantes. Ahora bien, al analizar las particularidades de cada área, se observa cierta variabilidad en la frecuencia de rocas no locales que podría relacionarse con las maneras en que éstas eran distribuidas en las poblaciones, complementándose en un entramado social complejo, con distintos niveles de organización. Y esto, a su vez se ve reflejado en la tecnología lítica.
