La apertura de la naturaleza y su transformación en paisaje cultural rural surge recientemente en la historia de la humanidad. Con la aparición de la agricultura en diversos lugares del mundo, hace unos 10.000 años se inicia este proceso de hominización del paisaje a través de la apertura y expansión de la frontera homínida. Dicho proceso se produjo extensivamente en el paisaje cultural de la Cordillera de Los Andes de La Araucanía sólo a partir de su incorporación al Estado de Chile a fines del siglo XIX. Es por esto que es uno de los paisajes culturales más jóvenes del mundo, en el que aún se conservan relictos del paisaje original. Complementariamente, después de algo más de cien años de hominización, hoy presenta en amplias zonas un acelerado proceso de desertificación y agonía del paisaje. En este sentido, generalizadamente se han abierto tierras y se ha usado el territorio explotando sus recursos en forma insustentable. En esta investigación se analizan los procesos de colonización, apertura y expansión de la frontera homínida en el paisaje cultural de la Cordillera de Los Andes de la Araucanía, para sentar las bases para su ordenamiento, restauración y gobernanza.
