Durante el periodo conocido como la Guerra Fría, que supuso el enfrentamiento no directo entre Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética junto a sus respectivos bloques, la "guerra psicológica" fue sin duda el arma preferida por las dos superpotencias en la contienda. Y dentro de esa guerra de propaganda, el cine sería un instrumento de incalculable valor. Es en este contexto cuando el cine de Hollywood se revela como el mejor medio para propagar las bondades del "american way of life" por todo el mundo, especialmente en aquellas zonas afectadas por la devastación de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y por tanto susceptibles de caer bajo la órbita comunista. En este estudio analizaremos de qué forma el contexto socio-político de la Guerra Fría afectó al cine norteamericano durante las décadas centrales del conflicto bipolar. Veremos así, entre otros, el ciclo de películas anticomunistas que salieron a la luz en esos años, cómo la ciencia-ficción y la serie B aprovechan el pánico nuclear para sus historias, y qué tipo de películas se decidían que fueran las más adecuadas para su exportación, y la participación que tuvo el gobierno de Washington en ello.
