Esta monografía es el resultado de una profunda investigación acerca de las “Vírgenes abrideras” o “Vírgenes tríptico”, un tipo de esculturas surgidas en los albores de la Baja Edad Media y que, si bien en un primer momento se adecuaron a las prácticas religiosas públicas y privadas, con posterioridad suscitaron una gran controversia entre los círculos teológicos de la Contrarreforma. La polémica estuvo servida cuando se vio que algunas de estas esculturas se abrían en su parte frontal para exhibir en su interior otra talla de menor tamaño con la representación de la Trinidad, lo que en palabras del papa Benedicto XIV las convertía en una suerte de “Vírgenes Deíparas llevando a la Trinidad en su útero”. Estas y otras nociones son analizadas de modo crítico, descubriendo asimismo como las abrideras lograron despertar la expectación y curiosidad de los falsificadores de arte en el siglo XIX.
