El presente trabajo aborda la problemática instaurada en torno a la conformación de la identidad social y cultural en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. El eje sobre el que se desarrolla, tiene al tango como pieza basal. La transversalidad de este género musical, dentro de la sociedad porteña -a la que se circunscribe el análisis- como resultado de una serie de factores que estructuralmente afectaron y remodelaron el tejido social, en el que el tango tuvo su fuente de inspiración y desarrollo, permiten observar su evolución como género musical desde sus orígenes en los márgenes sociales y musicales hasta convertirse en un género hegemónico e ícono de la identidad de los habitantes de Buenos Aires. Paralelamente, este género musical sobrepasó los límites impuestos dentro de la estratificación económica y cultural imperante en la sociedad porteña de aquellos años, superando las dicotomías ideológicas y sociales, autopotenciando su ascenso y caracterización dentro del imaginario social asi como en la construcción de una identidad colectiva enmarcada en un período histórico signado por la falta de legitimidad institucional y exclusión de amplias capas de la población en lo económico y político
