Les résultats de cette étude montrent que les importations et les exportations du Bénin sont liées et que leur action combinée a un effet positif sur la croissance économique. L'étude de ces relations fait apparaître nettement deux sous périodes caractérisées chacune par un système économique. La sous période allant de 1980 à 1989 où le Bénin avait évolué dans un système d'économie planifiée et centralisée et la sous période 1990 à 2008 dominée par une économie de marché centrée sur l'initiative privée. Ces résultats nous ont amené à recommander que le Bénin pourrait réduire sa dépendance vis-à-vis de l'extérieur en augmentant sa production dans certains secteurs d'activités pour accroitre ses exportations ; ce qui augmenterait d'ailleurs son taux de croissance économique, et favoriserait la création de nouveaux emplois, un atout pour l'économie. Ce qui nous amène à affirmer que le Bénin gagnerait à concentrer ses efforts dans l'amélioration de son potentiel productif.
