L’enjeu des relations entre chrétiens occidentaux et orientaux pendant les croisades fait souvent l’objet d’explications simplistes qui se limitent aux anecdotes et aux vieilles conventions historiographiques. Les dimensions culturelles des rapports entre les croisés et les Byzantins, telles que rapportées par les chroniqueurs occidentaux aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles, nous permettent toutefois de comprendre la complexité des relations chrétiennes et de souligner les nuances qui s’imposent. L’image des Byzantins dans les chroniques occidentales des croisades, empreinte par moments d’admiration et d’autres fois de répulsion, illustre bien l’ambivalence des rapports entre deux mondes chrétiens pendant une période décisive de leur évolution. À travers le prisme des représentations, les mécanismes d’altérité et d’identité qui opposaient les Latins et les Grecs démentent l’idée d’une détérioration constante et progressive des relations chrétiennes, et laissent plutôt entrevoir des rapports ambivalents, animés par les espoirs ténus d’une plus grande fraternité chrétienne.
