Le XVIIe siècle a vu les choix confessionnels des chrétiens d'Europe se confirmer. Ce phénomène s'est fait grâce au processus de confessionnalisation qui fut à la fois européen, national et individuel. Il fut le fruit et le moteur d'une affirmation identitaire qui a permis à l'Angleterre et à l'Ecosse de se différencier au sein de l'union des couronnes, à partir de 1603. Cette étude a pour ambition de comprendre ce qui a motivé cette affirmation à la fois identitaire et confessionnelle et ce qu'elle reflète des identités anglaise, écossaise et britannique. En un siècle, les Eglises nationales de l'Ile sont devenues les porte-parole et les garantes de l'indépendance culturelle de leur nation. L'indépendance des Eglises s'est finalement imposée comme une nécessité, une condition sine qua non dans la construction de la Grande-Bretagne. Les contextes nationaux et européens, les intérêts de la couronne et des factions religieuses ont progressivement esquissé un nouveau paysage religieux sur l'Ile, permettant la naissance d'une unité protestante à visages multiples, reflet de ce qu'est encore aujourd'hui la Grande-Bretagne: un pays aux nations attachées à préserver leurs spécificités.
