Magisterarbeit, die am 25.09.2002 erfolgreich an einer Universität in Deutschland im Fachbereich Sozialwissenschaften eingereicht wurde. Zusammenfassung: Seit 1997 unterliegt die politische Positionierung Indonesiens in Südostasien mit Einbruch der Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise sowie dem Ende der Präsidentschaft Suhartos einem wesentlichen Wandel. Jakarta muss sich nun primär mit Initiativen zur Bewältigung der inneren Krise beschäftigen und kann daher seiner traditionell integrativen Funktion als führendes Mitglied der Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) nur noch eingeschränkt nachkommen. Diese Untersuchung befasst sich mittels des konstruktivistischen Ansatzes vor allem mit Indonesiens Führungsanspruch innerhalb dieser Organisation, der sich aus materiellen und konzeptionellen Faktoren erschließt. Hieraus lässt sich erklären, warum Indonesien seine dominante Position in der ASEAN aufrechterhalten will, obwohl sie sich im Grunde nicht aus seinem derzeitigen politischen, wirtschaftlichen und militärischen Potential ableiten lässt. Andererseits hat gerade der von der javanischen Identität Suhartos geprägte Konzeptionsrahmen der ASEAN, der durch einen harmonischen und nicht intervenierenden Politikstil Indonesiens Einfluss bislang sicherte, nun an Wirkung in der Gemeinschaft verloren. In diesem Zusammenhang lässt sich eine Art Aufbruchstimmung in der ASEAN feststellen. Indonesien kann dabei wohl vorerst nicht seine ursprüngliche dominante Rolle wiedergewinnen, so lange es sich nicht politisch und wirtschaftlich konsolidiert.
