Les femmes ont toujours utilisé l'écriture pour explorer leur spécificité, créant régulièrement des innovations littéraires. L'une d'elles a été nommée écriture féminine ou écriture du corps, car elle s'est ancrée à la seule place échappant à la structure patriarcale : l'expérience interne que les femmes ont d'elles-mêmes et de leur corps. Cet ouvrage propose deux méthodes d'exploration de l'écriture féminine. La première permet de repérer ce type d'écriture qui échappe aux définitions précises et de la démarquer des textes féminins en général. La deuxième est une méthodologie d'analyse proposée comme idéale pour l'écriture féminine: la génétique textuelle, qui permet de comparer le "premier jet" au produit fini. Ces deux méthodes révèlent une dimension essentielle de l'écriture féminine : son processus, en tant que calque isomorphe des affects et du corps de la femme. Car si la linéarité logocentrique est symbolique de la structure d'expression masculine, l'écriture féminine est bien une représentation structurelle du féminin. Elle n'est pas, comme il a été dit, le résultat des théories de la différence, pourtant essentielles à sa compréhension, mais existe indépendamment d'elles.
