Die menschliche Gesundheit ist stark mit Faktoren des Erdsystems verbunden. Werden diese Faktoren gestört, folgen Ökosystemänderungen, welche wiederum Einfluss auf die Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehungen haben. Die wichtigsten Änderungen werden dabei durch den anthropogenen Klimawandel verursacht. Eine der indirekten Folgen der Klimaveränderung ist die zunehmende Verbreitung von Infektionskrankheiten wie der Malaria, wobei aktuell besonders tropische und subtropische Gebiete regelmäßig von der Malaria betroffen sind. Aber auch gemäßigtere Breiten bieten zunehmend günstige klimatische Verhältnisse für Erreger und die krankheitsübertragenden Mücken, die Vektoren, so dass angesichts des Klimawandels eine Ausbreitung eigentlich tropischer Infektionskrankheiten wie der Malaria in Mitteleuropa zu befürchten ist. Julia Krimkowski untersucht in ihrer vorliegenden Studie mögliche Verbreitungsgebiete der Malaria in Europa und nimmt erstmalig eine Visualisierung der betroffenen Gegenden anhand eines Geographischen Informationssystems unter Einbeziehung von Daten des Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) und des Umweltbundesamtes vor. Die Studie zeigt auf, dass zukünftig auch in Deutschland mit autochthonen Malariafällen gerechnet werden muss. Dies bezieht sich besonders auf die klimatischen Gunstgebiete im Rheinland und am Oberrhein, denn dort sind nicht nur die Vektoren bereits heimisch, es werden zudem sowohl günstige Temperatur- als auch Niederschlagsbedingungen erwartet. Diese Resultate gewinnen zudem besonderes Gewicht durch ihre prinzipielle und methodische Übertragbarkeit auf andere mitteleuropäische Staaten. Krimkowski wendet sich an Geomediziner sowie an Leser, die an den Folgen des Klimawandels mit Blick auf das weite Arbeitsfeld der Geomedizin interessiert sind.
