Issu d'une thèse de doctorat défendue avec succès le 20 septembre 2011, à l'université de Montréal, Québec, ce livre analyse et critique la pensée de Peter L. Berger sous un angle particulier résumé dans le titre sous l'expression «la dialectique bergérienne». Il s'agit du rapport dialectique que Berger, sociologue et théologien protestant américain, établit entre le pluralisme religieux moderne et l'incertitude religieuse. En se basant sur une définition ambiguë de la religion et de la certitude religieuse, fondée sur son approche en sociologie de la connaissance et sur sa conception de l'idée du «principe protestant» originellement définie par Paul Tillich, Berger défend une approche libérale de la religion: le doute et l'incertitude seraient caractéristiques de la condition et de la conscience modernes et la certitude religieuse, y compris au sein du christianisme, serait largement anachronique; le marché religieux est à accepter et à étudier d'une façon inductive libre des traditions. Ce livre analyse et critique cettte position à base de l'idée de la «certitude quant au salut» défendue par les protestants évangéliques selon l'approche théologique wesleyenne.
