Bilingualer Sachfachunterricht ist zu einem festen Bestandteil der deutschen Bildungslandschaft geworden. Der Einsatz einer Fremdsprache als Arbeitssprache in Fächern wie Geschichte, Kunst oder Biologie trägt zur Herausbildung vielfältiger fremdsprachlicher Kompetenzen und damit zur Förderung der Mehrsprachigkeit bei. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der empirischen Erforschung von Lehr- bzw. Lernprozessen im bilingualen Biologieunterricht. Im Rahmen einer explorativen Studie wird die für den bilingualen Sachfachunterricht charakteristische Verschränkung fachlichen und sprachlichen Lernens am Beispiel des Definierens untersucht. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen einerseits eine deutliche Präsenz der Diskursfunktion Definieren in den beobachteten Unterrichtsstunden, andererseits lassen sich vielfach Defizite in der logisch-strukturellen, fachlichen sowie fremdsprachlichen Realisierung der Definitionen feststellen. Aus den Befunden können vielfältige Schlussfolgerungen für die didaktisch-methodische Gestaltung des bilingualen Sachfachunterrichts in der Sekundarstufe I abgeleitet werden.
