Dieses Buch ist eine überarbeitete Fassung der Dissertationsschrift, die die Autorin im Dezember 2006 an der CAU Kiel eingereicht hat. Thema sind endliche Gruppen, die eine isolierte Involution besitzen, also ein Element der Ordnung zwei, das mit keinem seiner Konjugierten außer sich selbst vertauschbar ist. G. Glauberman zeigte, dass isolierte Involutionen modulo dem größten Normalteiler ungerader Ordnung der Gruppe im Zentrum liegen. Dieser so genannte Z*-Satz spielte eine wichtige Rolle in der Klassifikation der endlichen einfachen Gruppen, da er zur Konsequenz hat, dass es in nicht-abelschen endlichen einfachen Gruppen niemals isolierte Involutionen gibt. In dieser Arbeit werden Methoden entwickelt, die einen gruppentheoretischen Beweis von Glaubermans Resultat zum Ziel haben. Dies ist deshalb von Interesse, weil Glauberman tiefliegende Ergebnisse aus der Blocktheorie verwendet und sich die Frage stellt, ob auch andere Methoden zum Erfolg führen. Das vorliegende Buch enthält einen neuen Beweis im Spezialfall, dass der Zentralisator einer isolierten Involution auflösbar ist, und entwickelt zahlreiche Techniken für die weitere Arbeit der Autorin an diesem Projekt.
