In der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung werden umfangreiche Ergebnisse zu Dünnschichten des Oberflächenproteins (Surface (S)-Layer) des Bacillus sphaericus NCTC 9602 vorgestellt, die mittels spektroskopischer Methoden gewonnen wurden. Begriffe wie die elektronische Struktur des S-Layers als auch Elektronenhüpfprozesse, einen auf Drehschwingungen basierenden Transportmechanismus, werden detailliert dargestellt. Eine Vielzahl von interessanten Sachverhalten im Hinblick auf die Ausbildung und Wechselwirkung von Metallclustern auf dem biologischen Templat werden beleuchtet. Spektroskopische Untersuchungen in Kombination mit Elektronenmikroskopie und Photoelektronenmikroskopie geben einen bisslang einzigartigen Einblick in derartige Systeme. Untersuchungen zur Schädigung reiner und Cluster bedeckter S-Layer bei intensiver Röntgenbestrahlung runden das Spektrum dieser Arbeit ab.
