Diese Dissertation diskutiert die Europapolitik des amerikanischen Präsidenten John F. Kennedy. Kennedy sah die Zusammenarbeit der europäischen Staaten als wesentlich an, jedoch wollte er ein zu starkes Europa, das die Vormachtstellung der USA gefährden könnte, vermeiden. Der französische Staatspräsident Charles de Gaulle war mit diesem Konzept der europäischen Integration nicht einverstanden. Er warnte regelmäßig vor einem zu starken amerikanischen Einfluss auf Europa. Ein Konflikt zwischen den beiden Staatsmännern war somit unausweichlich. Der Autor beschreibt die verschiedenen Aspekte dieser Kontroverse: in der Sicherheitspolitik, der Handelspolitik, aber auch bei der Frage, ob Großbritannien Mitglied in der Europäischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft werden sollte. Gleichzeitig wird nach den tieferen Ursachen für den amerikanisch-französischen Streit gesucht.
