Seit Juli 2008 existiert die Neufassung der Leitlinie zur „Prophylaxe der Neugeborenensepsis – frühe Form – durch Streptokokken der Gruppe B (GBS)“. Sie wurde von den einschlägigen Fachgesellschaften erarbeiten und veröffentlicht. In der Leitlinie geht es um die Vermeidung einer sehr gefährlichen Infektion von Neugeborenen und es wird empfohlen, Kinder ohne klinische Zeichen einer Infektion von Müttern mit GBS-Besiedelung oder unbekanntem GBS-Status eine laborchemische Untersuchung durchzuführen. Die Auswertung der Daten von 603 Neugeborenen konnte zeigen, dass durch die Empfehlung zur Blutentnahme mehr Nachteile als Vorteile für das Neugeborene zu befürchten sind und eine Blutentnahme als Screening unterbleiben sollte.
