Michael Moore ist der erfolgreichste und gleichzeitig umstrittenste Dokumentarfilmer aller Zeiten. Jeder seiner Filme ist ein Politikum. Er provoziert in Amerika und auf der ganzen Welt. Die Presse charakterisiert Moore als brillanten Satiriker und furiosen Propagandisten. 2003 avancierte er mit seinem Film Bowling for Columbine und seinem Buch Stupid White Men zur Gallionsfigur einer Amerika-kritischen Bewegung und erlangte internationale Bekanntheit. Im selben Jahr erhielt Michael Moore für Bowling for Columbine den Oscar für den besten Dokumentarfilm. Mit seinem Werk Fahrenheit 9/11 hat Moore versucht, das Medium Dokumentarfilm für ein bestimmtes politisches Interesse zu instrumentalisieren. Er intendierte, die Wiederwahl des amerikanischen Präsidenten George W. Bush am 2. November 2004 zu verhindern. Zentrales Thema des Films ist der Irakkrieg. Das spezielle Anliegen der Arbeit Meinungsmacher Michael Moore? besteht nun in der Analyse der Frage, ob es ein Dokumentarfilm mit dieser Reichweite und dieser internationalen Popularität schaffen kann, das Nationenimage Amerikas in Deutschland zu beeinflussen. Aufgrund der stringent einseitig negativen Argumentation des Films ist davon auszugehen, dass die Einstellung der Deutschen zu Amerika durch die Rezeption negativ beeinflusst wird.
