Desde 1957, año en el que realizó El séptimo sello y Fresas salvajes, Ingmar Bergman ha sido una de las principales figuras del cine internacional. A lo largo de una trayectoria de 60 años, Bergman escribió, produjo y dirigió cincuenta películas que definieron la concepción del individuo sobre sí mismo y su relación con las personas a las que ama, en películas como Persona, Secretos de un matrimonio o Fanny y Alexander. Antes de su muerte en 2007, Bergman concedió a los coeditores TASCHEN y Max Ström el completo acceso a sus archivos en la Fundación Bergman y la autorización para reeditar sus escritos y entrevistas, muchos de los cuales no habían sido difundidos más allá de las fronteras de Suecia. El investigador de cine Bengt Wanselius, que fue el fotógrafo de Bergman durante 20 años, buscó archivos fotográficos por todo el país, descubrió imágenes nunca vistas de las películas de Bergman y seleccionó fotografías inéditas de los archivos personales de numerosos autores. Esta reedición nace a partir del título descatalogado Bergman Archives, el libro más completo sobre el director publicado hasta la fecha. Para esta premiada producción, el editor de TASCHEN Paul Duncan se reunió con un equipo de expertos en la obra de Bergman que investigaron y redactaron un texto que, por vez primera, reunió todo el trabajo de Bergman en el cine. Tal es la profundidad de los escritos del director, que la mayor parte de la historia está contada con sus propias palabras. El libro cuenta también con una introducción escrita por un amigo y colaborador de Bergman, el actor Erland Josephson. El 24 de noviembre de 2008, Paul Duncan y Bengt Wanselius ganaron el premio August al mejor libro de no ficción publicado en Suecia ese año. Se trata del premio literario de mayor prestigio en el país, votado por libreros y bibliotecarios.
