Description

Since the late twentieth century, contemporary discussions about new scientific and technological advances have focused increasingly on the concern that the boundaries between humans and machines is becoming less distinct. Figures like the cyborg and posthuman have come to be used as short-hand references to how the technological and the human are merging into one. This book takes these two figures as a starting point for a sociological and philosophical exploration of the history of the relationship between humans and machines. Moving between contemporary and past sociological discussion of technological transformations that include the Luddite Revolution, automota, assisted reproduction and stem cell research, this book seeks to unpack how ¿the human¿ is shaped by the machine.
