Description

Wilhelm Ebstein (1836 - 1912) studierte Medizin bei Friedrich Theodor von Frerichs, Rudolf Virchow und Moritz HeinrichRomberg in Breslau und Berlin. Er promovierte 1859. Seine erste Anstellung erheilt er 1861 am Allerheiligen-Hospital in Breslau. Dorthabilitierte sich Ebstein 1869 für Innere Medizin. Fünf Jahre später erhielt er einen Ruf an den Lehrstuhl für Medizin an derUniversität Göttingen, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1906 tätig war. Ebstein galt zu Lebzeiten als der bedeutendste Fachmann auf demGebiet der Stoffwechselkrankheiten. Nach ihm sind mehrere Krankheitsbilder und Anomalien benannt ("Ebstein-Anomalie", "Pel-Ebstein-Fieber", "Ebsteinsche Krankheit"). Zu seinen erfolgreichen Werken gehört u. a. das Buch "Die Fettleibigkeit und ihre Behandlung", das insieben Auflagen erschienen ist. Nebenbei verfasste Ebstein mehrere medizin-historische Werke ("Die Medizin im Alten Testament" und "DieMedizin in Bibel und Talmud"). Mit vorliegendem Werk bewies Ebstein auch sein herausragendes Wissen auf dem Gebiet der Rheumatologie undGichtforschung.
