Ein Spezifikum einer solchen Finanzierung ist es, dass für den begrenzten Beteiligungszeitraum nicht nur Kapital bereitgestellt wird, sondern der Kapitalgeber auch eine mehr oder minder intensive Zusammenarbeit mit dem Management des finanzierten Unternehmens anstrebt. Frank Pankotsch untersucht folgende Fragen: Welche Optionen bieten sich Kapitalbeteiligungsgesellschaften bei der Gestaltung der Zusammenarbeit? Nach welchen Kriterien erfolgt deren Auswahl? Wie wirkt sich die getroffene Wahl auf den Beteiligungserfolg und insbesondere auf die erzielte Rendite aus? Eine Umfrage unter deutschen Kapitalbeteiligungsgesellschaften zeigt, dass die stereotype Zuordnung von Einzelinvestments zu so genannten Investitionsphasen Inhalte und Intensität der Zusammenarbeit stärker beeinflusst als konkrete Merkmale des Einzelfalls. Der Autor identifiziert drei typische Schwerpunktsetzungen bei der Zusammenarbeit, die den Aufgabenbereichen eines Financiers bzw. Gesellschafters, Beraters und Managers entsprechen. Entgegen dem herrschenden Verständnis erweist sich nicht die Berater-Strategie, sondern die eher puristische Gesellschafter-Strategie als die erfolgversprechendste.
