Face of time. 60 photographs of German people was the first portrait collection published August Sander (1876-1964). Published in 1929 by Munich-based Kurt Wolff/Transmare Verlag, the book immediately encounters wide media resonance, is discussed in the feuilleton of the major daily newspapers, recommended in literary supplements and highly praised in specialist journals. Among the reviewers there are such sounding names as Walter Benjamin, Kurt Tucholsky, Wilhelm Hausenstein, Sanders painter friend Franz W. Seiwert, Luise Straus-Ernst to Walker Evans in the USA. Face of the time was intended as a foresight of the far more comprehensive planned portrait project People of the 20th century, which Sander systematically pursued in the 20s despite a high workload as a professional photographer. The success of the book strengthened him in his artistic ambitions, which National Socialism put a sudden end: face of time, censorship fell victim - as did many of its prominent reviewers and most of the print media in which it had been discussed. Our volume is far more than another reissue of Sanders classic. The around 80 articles printed here published in the press between 1929 and 1933, which belong to the collection of the August Sander Archive of the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur accompanies the 60 image motifs and Alfred Döblin's original text of the first edition with a multi-voiced choir of contemporary reactions.
