Description

In times when contemporary art criticism is often reduced to name dropping and the popular marketing strategy of branding, discussions of individual works are of particular importance. The Swiss art historian Dieter Koepplin presents such a work on the sculpture Snowfall by Joseph Beuys stored in the Kunstmuseum Basel. Snowfall from 1965 is one of the few sculptures that Beuys has released into public separately, as a single piece, so to speak. This can be read as a sign of a special quality and strength of the object itself. Snowfall is made of barren materials, strictly speaking, three trunks of needled and branched Christmas trees and a stack of rectangular cut felt mats. Both parts artistically prove the proximity of Beuys to Minimal Art and Arte Povera. In addition, snowfall specifically addresses the Beuys plastic theory of heat and cold as well as the insulation character of felt in terms of temperature as well as sound. What is formally seen in the reduced form language of a pictogram or a traffic sign, the artist transforms into a winter fairy tale of silent, haunting poetry through the special character of the chosen materials.
