From the Back Cover Detaillierte Ultrastrukturstudien sind über den Bau der Chloroplasten und der begeißelten Zellen und über die Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Geißelapparat, dem Zytoskelett und den Vorgängen bei der Zellteilung der grünen Algen durchgeführt worden. Sie weisen auf enge Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen zwischen den Characeae, d.h. der Familie der Armleuchteralgen sensu stricto, einerseits und ihnen recht unähnlichen einfacher gebauten Algen anderseits hin, die früher an ganz anderen Stellen im System der Grünalgen eingeordnet waren. Aufgrund dieser Erkenntnisse wurde die bisherige Klasse der Charophyceae erweitert. Sie umfaßt außer den Charales jetzt mehrere weitere Ordnungen, und zwar die Chlorokybales, Klebsormidiales, Coleochaetales (die in Band 13 behandelt werden).
