The Alps play a central role in the history of geology. In this mountains, a wide range of geological phenomena can be observed particularly well. The book first gives the modern plate tectonic frame. Subsequently, the rock associations of the crystalline basement as well as the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediment sequences are discussed. The description of the various rock associations is supplemented by a discussion in the paleogeographic and plate tectonic context. The tectonic construction of the Alps, starting from the Jura to the butt basin, is illustrated by a variety of profile cuts. To understand the evolution of the Alps, their depth structure, metamorphic history and kinematic development of ceiling systems are also considered. The orogenic development is described in more detail by orogenic timetables, which also illuminates the role of younger sediments within and at the edges of the Alps. Recent geological history is eventually shaped by the Pliocene river systems, the great Pleistocene glaciations, landscaping, and recent movements. The book is aimed at students and lecturers of geology, but also for earth scientists who are interested in this Alps. The rich illustration with maps, profiles, stratigraphic column profiles and development schemes can serve as a basis for excursions.
