In den vergangenen Jahren wurden in den USA und in Europa zahlreiche Manipulationen von Jahresabschlüssen bekannt. Dies trug wesentlich dazu bei, dass die Börsenkapitalisierung dramatisch abnahm. Selbst Aktionäre, deren Unternehmen nicht betroffen waren, mussten signifikante Wertverluste hinnehmen. Christian Terlinde erörtert die Problematik der Aufdeckung von Bilanzmanipulationen durch den Abschlussprüfer. Er untersucht zunächst, ob ein Abschlussprüfer (berufs-) rechtlich dazu verpflichtet ist und welche Maßnahmen vorgeschrieben werden. Anschließend würdigt er die internationalen und die US-amerikanischen Vorschriften und die Prüfungshandbücher der Big 4-Prüfungsgesellschaften. Auf der Basis einer empirischen Untersuchung in Deutschland befragt er Abschlussprüfer zu ihren Erfahrungen mit der Aufdeckung von Bilanzmanipulationen und stellt den State of the Art der internationalen Prüfungsforschung auf diesem Gebiet dar.
