Hannah Arendt heoretische "Eltern" der Arbeit sind Johann Friedrich Herbart, der Theore T tiker und Praktiker einer gesellschaftlich verantworteten und doch indivi duellen Erziehung, und Hannah Arendt, die politisch denkende und handelnde Theoretikerin der menschlichen Pluralitat und Freiheit. Aus meiner Sicht ist es nicht Zufall, daB beider Arbeiten zurn Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts ihre Re naissance erleben: Sie sind Theoretiker der letztlichen Unverftigbarkeit und Individualitiit des Individuurns und wissen zugleich urn dessen soziale Abhan gigkeit bei der Freiheit. Sie konnen darnit den Menschen der sog. Postmo derne, wenn auch auf verschiedene Weise, ein Angebot daftir machen, wie man auch ohne tiberbauende, sinnstiftende Figur -sei es einen entlastenden Gott, das Schicksal oder die (Fortschritts-) Geschichte -nicht in Orientie rungs-und Sinnlosigkeit verfallen moB, wenn man sich namlich auf die den Menschen gegebenen Moglichkeiten zum Umgang mit ihren Lebensbedin gungen besinnt: die Dinge und die menschlichen Verhhltnisse zu erkennen und an ihnen teilzunehmen; die Welt darzustellen, sie zu analysieren und zu ordnen und das individuelle Dulden, Haben und Treiben zu mit BewuBtsein gewlihlten Grundsatzen in Beziehung zu setzen -so 1.
