Vor gut einhundert Jahren unternahm Otto Franke, während seiner Tätigkeit als Dolmetscher an den deutschen Konsulaten und der Kaiserlichen Gesandtschaft in China, mehrere Reisen in das Landesinnere sowie nach Japan, Formosa und Korea. In seinem Nachlass fanden sich Tagebuchaufzeichnungen dieser Reisen sowie Hunderte von Fotografien, die größtenteils von ihm selbst aufgenommen wurden. Diese Aufzeichnungen werden jetzt, in der Edition seiner Enkeltochter Renata Fu-sheng Franke, in Kooperation mit ihrem Vater, dem Sinologen Wolfgang Franke (1912-2007), erstmals veröffentlicht. Zusammen mit den Fotografien, von denen 190 für diese Ausgabe ausgewählt wurden, stellen die Reisetagebücher Otto Frankes ein besonderes zeitgeschichtliches Dokument dar. Sie zeigen nicht nur, dass der spätere Nestor der deutschen Sinologie einen für die Kolonialzeit recht vorurteilsfreien Blick auf China hatte, sondern sie bilden auch die erste Materialgrundlage für einige seiner späteren journalistischen und wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen, wie der Anhang mit ausgewählten Beispielen seiner Reiseberichte in verschiedenen Zeitschriften belegt. Seine Reisen unternahm Otto Franke vorzugsweise in entlegene, damals noch kaum zugängliche Regionen, wie das Tiantai-Gebirge in der Provinz Zhejiang, die kaiserliche Sommerresidenz im mandschurischen Jehol oder die mongolischen Grassteppen. Seine Begeisterung für die chinesische Landschaft verband er dabei mit seinem Interesse am Buddhismus, indem er vorwiegend gebirgige Gegenden mit Klöstern und Tempelanlagen aufsuchte. Die Reisetagebucher und Fotografien Otto Frankes gewähren einen Einblick in eine heute verschwundene Welt.
