Goldschmiedewerke nahmen im Mittelalter und in der Fruhneuzeit stets einen herausragenden Platz ein. Als kostbare Fassungen von Reliquien, als Hostienmonstranzen und Messgerate waren sie Teil von Kirchenschatzen, als aufwandig gestaltete Pokale dienten sie einer profanen Reprasentationskultur. Im historischen Ungarn, also einschliesslich Siebenburgens im heutigen Rumanien und der Slowakei, sind sie in ganz unterschiedlichen konfessionellen und ethnischen Zusammenhangen zu finden. Die Autorin untersucht die Uberlieferung und Rezeption der Kunstwerke von deren Entstehung bis in das fruhe 20. Jahrhundert. Unter Einbeziehung der Hauptwerke wie auch der weniger bekannten Objekte gelingt nicht nur eine erste Gesamtdarstellung dieses bedeutenden Bestandes, sondern insbesondere mit Blick auf die daran geknupften nationalen und konfessionellen Deutungsmuster - auch eine exemplarische Analyse zentraler Punkte ostmitteleuropaischer Kunstgeschichtsschreibung. Mit Forschungsschwerpunkten in den Schatz- und Bildkunsten des Mittelalters und der Fruhneuzeit ist Evelin Wetter Konservatorin an der Abegg-Stiftung in Riggisberg (Schweiz) und lehrt an den Universtitaten Leipzig und Bern. Die vorliegende Untersuchung ist ihre an der Universtitat Leipzig angenommene Habililitationsschrift.
