DaB biopolymere Naturstoffe wie Cellulose und Wolle jedoch seit Be ginn der Menschheitsgeschichte eine iiberragende Rolle als Roh-und Werkstoffe spielen, diirfte allgemein bekannt sein. Obwohl wir heute in einem Zeitalter der Kunststoffe leben, sind natiirliche Polymere nach wie vor unentbehrlich. Die Einsicht, daB bio polymere Naturstoffe wie z. B. die Wolle in der Summe ihrer Eigenschaften oft synthetischen Polymeren iiberlegen sind, hat zu einem verstarkten Interesse an diesen Naturprodukten gefiihrt. Der Preisanstieg und die Verknappung des Erdols werden mog licherweise diese Entwicklung nom beschleunigen. Seit den bahnbremenden Arbeiten Hermann Staudingers, die vor einem halben Jahrhundert die Existenz von Makromolekiilen ab sicherten, wissen wir, daB die meisten Eigenschaften dieser Polymere nicht aus dem Verhalten ihrer monomeren Bausteine vorherzusagen sind. Der makromolekulare Aufbau bestimmt Struktur und Funk tion der Biopolymeren und eroffnet nicht nur fiir Chemiker, Physikochemiker und Biomemiker ein faszinierendes Betatigungs feld."
