Das Erstlingswerk von David Hume (1711–1776), im Original A Treatise of Human Nature: Being an Attempt to Introduce the Experimental Method of Reasoning into Moral Subjects, besteht aus drei Büchern: Über den Verstand , Über die Affekte (beide 1739) und Über Moral (1740). Das Jugendwerk Humes gilt, da es im Kern bereits die ganze Philosophie des kritischen Empirikers enthält, als sein grundlegendes theoretisches Werk. Humes Wissenschaft von der menschlichen Natur vollzieht sich in diesen drei Bänden in einer doppelten Bewegung: Sie zerstört der Intention nach die traditionelle Metaphysik und etabliert deren ihr selbst verborgene Wahrheit in einer neuartigen Geisteswissenschaft oder Anthropologie, der science of man. In dieser anthropologischen Restauration der rationalistischen Metaphysik ähnelt die Hume’sche Philosophie der Anthropologie in der Renaissance und der beginnenden Neuzeit, die sich gegen die Scholastik und deren Ontologie wendet und ein anthropozentrisches Konzept an ihre Stelle setzt.
