Vor dem Hintergrund einer religionsgeschichtlichen und naturphilosophischen Rekonstruktion des frühneuzeitlichen Gesetzesbegriffs beschreibt der Autor die Ablösung einer theologisch fundierten durch eine philosophisch begründete Moral. Bestimmt wird diese nicht linear verlaufende Problemgeschichte von einem Primat des Rechts insofern, als sich die Moral erst allmählich aus "theonomen Formularen" des alten Naturrechts herauslöst. Das Buch erläutert diesen Prozeß in vier Stadien: 1. das Souveränitätskonzept Bodins, dem Anspruch nach säkular, aber auf einem animistischen Fundament beruhend; 2. Hobbes' Begründung des inneren Staats- bzw. Bürgerrechts, die aus seinem Kontraktualismus resultiert; 3. Spinozas Diskreditierung von Religiosität als defizientem Modus des Vernunftverhältnisses zur Natur; und schließlich 4. D'Holbachs strikt areligiöse und physiologische Begründung des Moralsystems. Der Übergang von einer 'theologie-politischen' zu einer 'rein vernünftigen 'Autonomie ermöglichte es später Kant, eine bloß naturphilosophische Deutung des Menschen wie jedwede Bevormundung durch gesellschaftliche Fremdbestimmung zurückzuweisen.
