Der dritte Band in der Reihe "System der Vernunft. Kant und der Deutsche Idealismus" untersucht die komplexen Debatten um den Systembegriff in der Philosophie um 1800. Um 1800 bricht die Debatte um die Möglichkeit eines Systems der Philosophie nach Kant vehement aus. Hierfür stehen die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Fichte und Schelling in den Jahren um 1800 sowie Hegels durchgreifende und in der Folge überaus wirkungsmächtige Kritik an Kant, Fichte und Jacobi. Über diese Debatte in der klassischen Deutschen Philosophie hinaus berücksichtigt der Band die um 1800 anhebende Kritik am Systemgedanken überhaupt. Sie wird greifbar in Friedrich Heinrich Jacobis entschiedener und höchst einflussreicher Absage an ein philosophisches System, Friedrich Schlegels Auseinandersetzung mit Fichtes Idealismus, Friedrich von Hardenbergs Plädoyer für ein "System der Systemlosigkeit" und Friedrich Schleiermachers systemkritische "Reden über die Religion" von 1799.
