Das zweibandige 'Handbuch der Dogmatik' ist ein Lehr- und Lernbuch der katholischen Dogmatik, die im Gefolge des II. Vatikanischen Konzils tiefgreifend erneuert wurde. Es bietet ein Kompendium der Inhalte des christlichen Glaubens, so wie diese in der gegenwartigen systematisch-theologischen Arbeit erhoben, bedacht und beschrieben werden. Die Gliederung entspricht weitgehend der bewahrten, in langem Lehr- und Studienbetrieb gewachsenen Traktatenfolge: Prolegomena, Gotteslehre, Schopfungslehre, Christologie, Pneumatologie, Gnadenlehre, Ekklesiologie, Mariologie, Sakramentenlehre, Eschatologie, Trinitatslehre. Diese Abfolge der theologischen Grundthemen, die sich aus der Kombination heilsgeschichtlicher und systematisch-theologischer Aspekte ergeben hat und im wesentlichen den Aufbau und die trinitarische Struktur des Credo aufgreift, ist in ihrer inneren Logik nicht leicht zu uberbieten. Die stark heilsgeschichtlich gepragte Gotteslehre zu Beginn verweist darauf, dass die Rede von Vater, Sohn und Geist, also der Glaube an den dreieinen Gott, in allen folgenden Traktaten vorausgesetzt und konkret ausformuliert wird. Gerade deshalb mundet die Darstellung in die formell ausgefuhrte Trinitatslehre, die wie eine Summe das Ganze des Glaubens bundelt und so zugleich das endgultige Ziel der christlichen Hoffnung, die Gemeinschaft der unermesslichen Lebensfulle Gottes, thematisiert. Bei der Konzeption der Gesamtdarstellung spielt von Anfang an der Gedanke des wahren und erfullten Lebens, das der lebendige Gott uns ermoglichen will, eine grosse Rolle: Glauben als Leben aus und in der Zuneigung Gottes. Dieser 'rote Faden' des Werkes kommt in den Oberschriften der drei grossen Teile zum Vorschein: Der Gott des Lebens; Jesus Christus - Weg des Lebens; Leben aus dem Geist.
