The assessment guidelines on motor vehicle suitability (BGL), issued by the Federal Institute for Road Affairs (BASt). are an essential document for the assessment of drivers whose driving suitability is in doubt. Since their first publication in 2000, they have been substantially expanded or in parts fundamentally revised. This also required a revision of the BGL comment. The long-awaited third edition of this well-introduced standard work takes into account the state of BGL dated 24.5.2018 and is in turn an important aid for the practice of professional assessment of the physical and mental suitability of motor vehicle drivers. Directionally newly recorded, among other things, - An introduction to the system of driving suitability assessment, - the technically fundamentally new approach to putting the actual risk assessment in cardiovascular diseases at the centre of the driving aptitude assessment, - Notes and principles as to whether and to what extent the guidelines of the BGL are easily applicable to older drivers in certain chapters, as case constellations can often be complex due to interactions and require a holistic approach in the context of the driving aptitude assessment, - the consideration of the relationship between intensive traffic problems and driving suitability, - the applicability of provisions of BGL for certain cases also in the context of other modes of transport (air, water, rail). In addition, information on driving suitability relevant diseases have already been developed, whose current scientific findings are still insufficiently represented in the valid version of the BGL (such as epilepsy and mental disorders) or which have not yet been considered as an independent clinical picture in Annex 4 to the Driving Licence Regulation (FeV) or in the BGL so far.
