Description

The question of the new visibility of death and the dead is discussed in this volume using numerous examples from the arts and media. Among the elementary guiding principles of a description and criticism of modernity is the claim that death is increasingly suppressed and excluded. Against this claim can be objected, death itself remains - despite all metaphysics - in principle unimaginable, untangible, opaque. So death cannot be repressed or excluded, quite unlike the dying and dead who were pushed from the 19th century from social traffic, the practices and stages of a symbolic exchange, to no man's land of clinics, autopsy rooms, morgues and extraterritorialised cemeteries. In his study of Nikolai Lesskow, Walter Benjamin claimed that it was perhaps the unconscious "main purpose" of bourgeois society to "give people the opportunity to escape the sight of dying." However, for several years, a revision of these culturally critical diagnoses has been forced downright on. The dead have returned, not only as a subject of spiritual, psychological or philosophical discourses, but in concrete, sensual, material form. This return occurs in the arts, literature, photographs, room installations and exhibitions; it occurs in films and TV series (such as "Six Feet Under", "CSI" or "Crossing Jordan"), which enlighten the audience in all forensic details about the concrete materiality of the dead; it is also visible in newly designed burial practices or in public debfor euthanasia, hospice movement, transplant medicine or the biotechnological promise of longevity - if not even "immortality". Therefore, the question of whether a cultural system of symbols and rituals is currently beginning to develop that contributes to a new visibility of death and the dead.
