Heinrich Brüning's »Memoiren 1918–1934« appeared in 1970, just a few months after his death at the German Publishing Institute. The highly anticipated memories of the Reich Chancellor of the years 1930 to 1932 and last chairman of the German Centre Party triggered a huge echo in media and historical expertise. The outstanding importance of the memoir work about the time of the Weimar Republic lay (and lies) in the presentation of the rapid developments at the beginning of the 1930s, in the interpretation of the decline of the first German democracy as well as the rise of the National Socialists and their takeover of power by a member of the political elite. The content of the memories felt sensational by contemporary witnesses, companions and friends of Brüning as well as historians soon aroused doubts about their source loyalty. Since the 1970s, historical science has repeatedly called for a historical-critical reissue of the memoirs. After essential sources from Brüning's estate had returned to the Harvard University Archives, this historical-critical new edition of the »Memoirs 1918-1934« could be started and completed with this publication. 2 x half bands.
